CHILE SEEK REDEMPTION AGAINST ARGENTINA

Chile face a big battle to qualify for the World Cup 2022 tournament in Qatar ahead of their final four qualifying games starting with the home game against Argentina who are already through to the tournament. The Chileans were on a good run of three straight wins in the World Cup 2022 qualifiers before they were stopped by Ecuador in their last qualifier in November.

The Chileans had moved into one of the qualifying slots for Qatar 2022 after the run of three successive wins only for them to drop out of contention with the loss at the hands of the Ecuadorians. The three straight wins moved them to fifth spot on the standings which would be good enough for a place in the inter-confederation playoffs. They are now back to sixth spot after the 2-0 defeat to Ecuador.

Chile began the run of three consecutive World Cup 2022 qualifying wins with the 2-0 home win over Paraguay thanks to two second half goals from Ben Bereton-Diaz and Mauricio Isla. A brace from Erick Pulgar and a Ben Bereton-Diaz strike gave the Chileans a 3-0 home victory over the Venezuelans to make it two straight wins before an Antony Silva own goal secured a 1-0 away win over Paraguay to make it three successive World Cup 2022 qualifying victories.

The run of wins came to an end at home to Ecuador thanks in part to the red card given to one of the star players for Chile. Inter Milan midfielder Arturo Vidal was sent off shortly after Ecuador had taken the lead through PervianEstupinan in the ninth minute. Moises Caicedo made sure of the points for Ecuador with the second goal in the final moments of the game as the Ecuadorians moved a step closer to a place at the tournament on Qatari soil next year.

The Chileans would be hoping to get back to winning ways without the suspended Vidal when they play hosts to Argentina on January 27, 2022.
